The George Beadle and Edward Tatum experiment proved that genes are responsible for making enzymes that control metabolic processes.
This conclusion was thanks to a question they knew before, how can a piece of DNA be transformed into protein? This experiment was performed with a bread fungus Neurospora, a type of bread mold. While doing the experiment, they introduced these fungi into a minimal environment, where they first introduced vitamins and realized that nothing was wrong, then sugars, but they also did not realize that all they needed were these fungi. It was these amino acids that were able to reproduce. With this they separated these mutated fungi into each of the amino acids, and realized that they reproduced in Argentina. Once this was achieved, they were able to understand that the mutations affected the protein chains (which have amino acids) in our body.
